Hydrating/Moisturizing Ingredients to look out for in your products

Moisturizing is the bedrock to all skincare routine. If you do every other routine: exfoliate, cleanse,  masque, etc and you skip the moisturizer, you will be doing more harm than good  to your skin. You should never skip the moisturizer.

Now, there are some moisturizing ingredients we would like you to pay attention to when shopping for your next products.

Hydrating/Moisturizing Ingredients to look out for in your products

– Hyaluronic acid: This is a sugar that is found naturally occurring in the skin. It helps to attract and bind water to collagen, keeping it trapped in the skin. Its main function is to retain water to keep your tissue moist. When applied to the skin, hyaluronic acid  makes the skin soft and supple.

Over time, the natural aging process and exposure to other environmental stressors can decrease the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin. This is why it is necessary to apply it to your skin. Products rich in hyaluronic acid can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and help to treat inflammed skins.

– Lactic acid: Lactic acid is a type of AHA, a water soluble organic compound. What sets lactic acid apart from other AHAs is its ability to keep the skin hydrated naturally.

Lactic acid helps to increase cell turn over, thereby eliminating dead cells from the surface of the skin. This results in a brighter complexion.

Lactic acid also helps to stimulate the production of collagen which makes the skin firm

– Ceramides: Ceramides are found in large quantities in the skin, up to 50%.They are found in the upper most layer of the skin. With age also, like other components of the skin, they decrease.

Ceramides help to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL).  TEWL is the loss of water from the body through the epidermis. This can occur when the skin is damaged and when there is excess loss of water from the skin, it can result to a dry or dehydrated skin. This can also leave the skin irritated, inflammed and cracky.

Ceramides helps to balance the moisture level, retain water and moisture in the skin, making the skin look vibrant.

– Glycerin : This is one of the most popular hydrating ingredients. Glycerin helps to draw moisture to the skin. This makes it a humectant. Glycerin helps to treat and prevent dry skin, itchy skin, dehydrated skin, diaper rash and lots more.

Other Ingredients to look out for include Squalene, fatty alcohols, etc.
